Just like rail freight transport operators and (other) railways undertakings, entities exploiting heritage vehicles t have to bear their own costs of implementing ERTMS. Because these entities often do not commercially exploit their vehicles, financial support is often needed to build a positive business case.
ERTMS Light
Retrofitting ERTMS into heritage vehicles is often physically impossible. To cope with this issue, the option of a mobile system has been studied, to avoid having to install a fixed ERTMS installation on board. The study has shown that quite a large part of the system still has to be installed to fully integrate ERTMS in the engine.
Heritage fleet in Europe
The heritage fleet in the Netherlands is too small for a full solution. An increase in scale is therefore required. Therefore, parties can work together with other European entities regarding heritage vehicles fleet. The ERTMS Programme Management supports a European collaboration for the heritage fleet.
